Hey everyone! Here are some updates regarding the SAEYLS 2013:

  • The date has been confirmed to be from the 31st of March - 6th of April.
  • The fee required for the summit is a total of  RM 700/ 250 USD per person.
  • The venue is MyHotel in Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur.

Rules and regulations :

1)      Each school must prepare a video that touches on all the leadership and environmental-related aspects of their school to be presented at SAEYLS to the other schools. This is to ensure a healthy competition and also the exchange of ideas on the environment between schools.  
2)      The video must be prepared for a minimum of three minutes but must not exceed five minutes.
3)      The video prepared must have the things listed below and prepared in order :-
a.       An introduction to the school (Name of school, vision and mission)
b.      Leadership and environmental-friendly practices held in school (At least three)
c.       An explanation of each practice (A brief history/benefits)
d.      Shots of school leaders and environmental places in school (Along with a commentary)
e.      A leadership and an Eco club meeting/activity in school
f.        Eco-related practices that will be applied in the future
4)      The presenter(s) in the video must state each section in the format clearly in the video before going on with the explanation. As an example :-
“I will start off this video with giving and introduction to the school as stated in ‘a’. The name of this school is…”
This is to avoid confusion for both audience and the judges. The judges will be able to give the marks accurately and accordingly to each section.
5)      The video must be saved in a pen drive in WMV or AVI Format and submitted to the SAEYLS Organizing Committee Members at the Registration Counter upon arrival at the place of accommodation. Kindly rename the pen drive as the name of your school and place a sticker with your schools’ name on the pen drive. Failure in submitting the pen drive at the registration counter upon arrival will result in the deduction of marks.
6)      The video prepared must not have any negative inclinations or influences. It must also be clear and precise. Schools that submit videos that have any negative indications will automatically be disqualified from the competition.

Selamat Datang ke Kuala Lumpur!

Kuala Lumpur is a multicultural tropical city. People of various ethnicity, be it Malay, Chinese , Indian or natives from Sabah and Sarawak, live and work together in Malaysia.  Malaysians respect and celebrate their diversity and no where is it more apparent than in Kuala Lumpur.


Geography


Kuala Lumpur is situated in the Peninsula of Malaysia,  at the heart of South East Asia, bordering Thailand in the north, Indonesia in the south and Phillipines in the east. 


Climate

The weather in Kuala Lumpur is typically warm with occasional tropical rain . The temperature ranges between 23 degrees celsius to 30 degrees celsius.   The monsoon could be felt in December.


Clothing

As the weather in Kuala Lumpur is tropical with lots of sunshine,  light cotton or linen clothes are recommended.  While Kuala Lumpur is a bustling modern city, it  still reveres its culture and heritage. Thus,   visitors are advised to dress modestly.


Language

English  is widely spoken in Kuala Lumpur  along with the various ethnic tongues- Malay ( majority), Chinese and Tamil.

a) MOSQUES AND TEMPLES



NATIONAL MOSQUE, KUALA LUMPUR





The National Mosque is  one of Southeast Asia's largest mosques, its unique modern design embodies a contemporary expression of traditional Islamic art, calligraphy and ornamentation. 


The National Mosque is located right next to the architecturally fabulous old railway station, and just a short walk to the sprawling Lake Gardens and National Monument. 




PUTRA MOSQUE, PUTRAJAYA

Masjid Putra , more commonly known as the Putrajaya Pink Mosque  is a beautiful mosque built in 1997 . It combines the elements of the Malay and Middle Eastern architecture .   It is located in Putrajaya, only  an hour's drive from city centre.

Along Jalan Tun HS Lee , the old town of Kuala Lumpur,  you will come across a Chinese Temple located across a Hindu Temple.   This old temple served many immigrant workers from China who contributed to Kuala Lumpur's rise as the Tin town during the British rule.

Located amongst the limestone hills in north of Kuala Lumpur  is Batu Caves Sri Subramaniar Temple.

The Batu Caves Temple is home not only to Temple but also the monkeys and bats which live in the limestone caves.   Every year the festival of Thaipusam is celebrated in Batu Caves.


b) MOTHER NATURE IN KUALA LUMPUR


FOREST INSTITUTE OF MALAYSIA (FRIM) , KUALA LUMPUR






Forest Research Institute of Malaysia is located in the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve , Kepong, Selangor which is about half an hour's drive from the city centre.  It has a canopy walk , camping grounds, walking trails and many more attractions within its grounds.



RIMBA ILMU, UNIVERSITI MALAYA,  KUALA LUMPUR

Even nearer is  Rimba Ilmu , a botanic garden  located in the University of Malaya.  "The Forest of Knowledge" occupies an area of 80 hectares and provides a great insight into Malaysia's tropical plants.

Paya Indah is an eco tourism park spanning over 3100 hectares of man made wetlands.  There is a number of outdoor activities available for the adventurous visitor- from cycling to bird watching to feeding hippos and crocodiles.

The Petronas Twin Towers is the pride of the nation. Its completion as the tallest building in 1998 marked the recognition that Kuala Lumpur is a developed city .  Petronas Twin towers houses corporate offices , a philharmonic auditorium,  shopping mall, park with fountains.  Visitors of all ages would find something to do here.


ROYAL SELANGOR PEWTER



The Royal Selangor Pewter visitors centre is near Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur.  It showcases the creations made from pewter, an amalgam of tin.
